Hello Walkers!

Time to get serious about joining us in an unforgettable journey around the Monterey Bay.

Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz

The starting point for Walk the Bay is Santa Cruz. We think it’s a very special place along our coastal walk. Our neighbor to the north (60 miles) San Francisco agrees….the SF Chronicle recently featured Santa Cruz and the writer captured the unique nature of the town. She observed that Santa Cruz offers the unique blend of adventure and leisure. Sounds like the perfect place to start a Slow Adventure walking trip!

The writer also gave kudos to some of our walkers’ favorites spots, including The Dream Inn, Aquarius Restaurant, and the Surfer Museum at the Lighthouse.

Many of us don’t think of July as the best time to spot whales in the Monterey Bay.  Well, I’ve had to rethink my notions of what months are best for whale watching.  Recent Walk the Bay walkers were treated to fabulous whale watching this holiday weekend, spending at least 40 minutes with a pod of humpbacks up close and personal.

One of the Stagnero whale watching yachts

The Stagnero family run trips from the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor daily.  Their 60 foot power yacht takes you out in the bay in comfort to spend time with the whales, dolphins, and many other sea mammals. Make sure to book a trip on Day One of Walk the Bay….Whale Watching Trips

Sea Lions at the Wharf in Santa Cruz

It has been a very unusual year for the marine mammals in the Monterey Bay. A sea lion gave birth to her pup on the main beach in Santa Cruz this month, in front of many vacationing onlookers. It was quite an event considering a sea lion pup can weigh up to 13 pounds and measure up to 2.5 feet long.

If you want to watch sea lion families at a very close and safe proximity, the Santa Cruz Wharf has several boat launching decks at sea level that have become home to many lounging sea lion families.

If you walk out to the lighthouse, you’ll see many more sea lions occupying “Seal Rock” out past the surfers.   You can’t miss their familiar barking!
