We've had several stories this month about shark strandings along the Monterey Bay. These sharks wash up infrequently in August and September along our Walk the Bay paths on the coast. I decided to learn a little more about the sharks that live in the Monterey Bay and was surprised to find that a dozen different shark species call Monterey Bay their home. Check out the very informative webpage on the sharks found in the bay from the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation in Santa Cruz. If you are walking along the Monterey Bay and happen upon any stranded marine mammal be sure to call 831-633-6298.

Santa Cruz is gaining a new attraction. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center is joining the historic Municipal Wharf and Beach Boardwalk attractions on the waterfront. This new center will be a great way for local residents and visitors to learn more about the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. It will remind all of us that we are fortunate to have a national treasure in our own front yard. The City Of Santa Cruz provided a ¾ acre lot right across from the wharf and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries provided the construction funding for this amazing new visitor center that will feature state-of-the-art, interactive, interpretive exhibits. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is conducting a $3 million Capital Campaign to pay for the exhibits. Please contribute generously! The construction process will feature sustainable green design and construction methods. So, those of us living here in Santa Cruz will be able to enjoy watching this project even before the doors open to the public.

One of our latest Walk the Bay finishers was born and raised in New Mexico and walks every day in the mountains with her dogs. She easily adapted to beach walking on the Monterey Bay and finished the 40 mile route with a smile and a celebratory beverage. Here's hoping you take the plunge and join us for a September or October walk. By the way, both river crossings are now quite enjoyable and stress free. Please send me an email with any questions, suggestions, ideas, or just to say HI! margaret@slowadventure.us

Ed Stafford is a walker....who has taken the slow adventure to a whole new height. He just completed walking the entire length of the Amazon River! Yes, he's the first person to ever accomplish this feat. Other expeditions have explored the entire river, however, they used boats. Ed walked the entire distance! It took him 2.5 years. He began on April 2, 2008, on the southern coast of Peru. Stafford started walking with a friend, who left after several months, and was then accompanied by hundreds of locals he met along the way. He finished on a beach in Northern Brazil....running into the Atlantic Ocean. If you'd like to test your endurance walking abilities, go to the Amazon. However, you might want to Walk the Bay first to tune up your legs and your powers of observation. Our next trip from Santa Cruz to Monterey leaves today. Yours truly will be blogging from the trail as I will walk the entire distance with the group for the first time this season. I know it will be a great experience!

One of the favorite parts of Walk the Bay is the day we walk to a secret area we call Beach Glass Beach. Walkers stop and stoop and pick up amazing pieces of beach glass in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Expert beach glass collectors, like my walking friend, Pam, have collected glass for years. Pam recently created and installed a large window covering made entirely from beach glass. It is gorgeous and awe inspiring. Pam assures me the effort to create this piece was formidable. But, check out the beautiful results! I've always enjoyed finding beach glass but until I became involved with Walk the Bay I had no idea how many people collect beach glass and how avid collecting can become. A great article about beach glass or sea glass (including a slide show) can be found by clicking here.
