Coastal Cleanup Captains

We were happy to participate in this year’s International Coastal Cleanup. Slow Adventure ran the activities at Manresa State Beach (one of our favorite places!) and successfully registered, trained, and sorted trash pick-up for over 180 volunteers. Margaret, Clare, Marcia, Earl, and Deb (not pictured) had a great time working with enthusiastic beach lovers. Our cleanup netted 318 pounds of trash and recyclables from this gorgeous 4 mile beach. Please support the fantastic work of Save Our Shores and join us for another beach cleanup.

Young Volunteer!

One of our younger participants enjoyed a perfect day along the Monterey Bay.

Remember our last Walk the Bay trip of the 2010 season is October 11-15. I’d love for you to see the Monterey Bay at this amazing time of the year!

Fishing Kayak

Many of us think kayaking in the Monterey Bay is challenging enough with sea lions, sea otters, and fellow paddlers to keep track of. Others take off on well equipped kayaks to try their hand at fishing.

Sea Bass ( one of two)

Some of our Slow Adventure guests were fortunate to hear quite a “fish story” this weekend in Monterey. The kayaker pictured at the left had the amazing experience of catching two giant sea bass. Where to put these monster fish was the question of the day. He just laid them across the bow and managed to paddle to shore balancing his 100lb passengers.

Another fun activity to think about pursuing when you’ve finished your Walk the Bay adventure!

Walk the Bay - 4 Days & 40 Miles

I’m very happy to present a video outlining the highlights of our Walk the Bay hiking trip around Monterey Bay. All of the photos were taken by our walkers during 2010 with the exception of the aerial shots. Thanks to all our photographers and walkers. The music is courtesy of Good Old War, a great band!

Walk the Bay

A family reunion can be a memorable and wonderful event.  However, planning for a big get together can be difficult and time consuming.  A great (and easy) idea for an active family is an eco-friendly self-guided inn to inn walking trip.

Why?

  1. Walking makes for good conversation.  There is nothing better than a long walk to catch up with family members.
  2. Walking is an activity that most every family member can participate in, whether they are teenagers or grandparents.  There are many ways to include those with limited walking ability in the meals and other activities so they don’t feel left out.
  3. Self-guided means that everyone can start walking each day when they want to.  Sleeping in for the teenagers, up early for the parents.  It’s OK,  you’ll all finish at the next destination that evening.  Freedom and togetherness – a great concept.
  4. Inn to inn means you stay each night in a new (and memorable) place with interesting places to explore and restaurants to experience.
  5. Eco-friendly means you’ll help save the planet by staying on your feet, no cars allowed.  Nothing but fresh air, quiet comforts, and communing with nature.

If this sounds like a perfect family reunion, drop me an email and tell me about your family dynamic and the best dates for your event.  I’ll work on the logistics, distances, hotels, meals, and transportation.  You’ll be able to create a perfect active vacation to your family members, whether teenagers or grandparents.

Don’t put this off….an amazing and unforgettable journey awaits.

All of you who love the Monterey Bay should stay up to date with the work of Watsonville Wetlands Watch.  This is a dynamic group that promotes and protects this invaluable, vast, interesting, and amazing resource along the Monterey Bay.

If you haven’t subscribed to their e-newsletter, I really recommend it.  They host numerous monthly events, walks, educational opportunities, and keep you up to date about events in the Monterey Bay area that are relevant to the well being of the wetlands and the numerous animals that make their home along our shores.

Check out the September Newsletter and I think you’ll be impressed.  Click here!
